Tongo Eisen-Martin is the author of Heaven Is All Goodbyes (City Lights, 2017) which in 2018 won the American Book Award, the California Book Award, the Northern California Book Award for poetry, and was shortlisted for the Griffin International Poetry Prize. His other books include Blood on the Fog: Pocket Poets Series No. 62 (City Lights, 2021), Waiting Behind Tornados for Food (2020, Materials), and someone's dead already (Bootstrap Press, 2015). Named San Francisco Poet Laureate in 2021, Eisen-Martin is an educator and organizer whose work centers on issues of mass incarceration, extrajudicial killings of Black people, and human rights. He has taught at detention centers around the country and at the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University.
